PHILOSOPHY NOTE 

ON TURNISTAN

While the word “Tornistan” is the reversal of boats in Turkish, it is a combination of the words turn and astern in English or also called sternway. This story, in which there are quite metaphysical elements, and an allegorical narrative is aimed, is a story that depicts a space-time manifesto, that is, an individual, that thinks to end his/her existence, searching for the "logos", that is, the clinging to the daydreams with meaning. It is also inspired by my own experiences. This story, which questions the concept of "time" in the labyrinth of consciousness with the help of magical reality, is a short expression that questions the necessity of consciousness resisting extinction. In that way, the story of this individual is also a projection of the society he/she lives in and this society’s endurance to existential risks. To be able to “turn back”, society would need to question “the self”-first and resist the superposition of events that could shape the entirety of humanity.

"Tornistan" kelimesi Türkçe'de teknelerin ters dönmesi anlamına gelirken, İngilizce'de turn ve astern kelimelerinin birleşiminden oluşuyor ya da sternway olarak da adlandırılıyor. Oldukça metafizik öğelerin yer aldığı ve alegorik bir anlatımın hedeflendiği bu öykü, bir uzay-zaman manifestosunu, yani varoluşuna son vermeyi düşünen bireyin "logos "u arayışını, anlam yüklü gün'düşlerine tutunuşunu anlatan bir öyküdür. Aynı zamanda kendi deneyimlerimden ilham alınarak yazılmıştır.  Bilincin labirentinde "zaman" kavramını büyülü gerçeklik yardımıyla sorgulayan bu öykü, yok olmaya direnen bilincin gerekliliğini sorgulayan kısa bir anlatımdır. Bu yönüyle bireyin öyküsü, aynı zamanda içinde yaşadığı toplumun ve bu toplumun varoluşsal risklere karşı dayanıklılığının da bir izdüşümüdür. Toplumun "geri dönebilmesi" için öncelikle "kendini" sorgulaması ve tüm insanlığı şekillendirebilecek olayların üst üste gelmesine direnmesi gerekecektir.

ÖZET

Tornistan başlıklı bu edebî kaynak, geleceğin Türkiye’sinde geçen spekülatif bir kurgu anlatısı sunar. Ege’de yaşayan mürekkep balıklarından elde edilen, dünya dışı kökenli yeni bir maddenin oda sıcaklığında süperiletkenlik yaratabildiğinin keşfi, anlatının bilimsel zeminini oluşturur. Metin, bu canlıların sömürülmesi etrafında şekillenen siyasal bir çatışmayı, varoluşsal bir krizle yüzleşen başkahramanın felsefî mücadelesiyle yan yana getirir. Çevresel uyarılara rağmen devletin endüstriyel çıkarımı dayatması sürerken, ana karakter bir fırtına sırasında hem mecazî hem de gerçek bir gemi kazası yaşar. Hikâye, adını denizcilik terimi olan “tornistan”dan alan tersine dönüş kavramını büyülü gerçekçilik ve metafizik temalar aracılığıyla araştırır. Nihayetinde anlatı, bilimsel hayreti, sosyo-politik eleştiriyi ve zaman ile bilincin döngüsel doğasına dair şiirsel düşünceleri iç içe geçirir.

Türkiye’nin bütünüyle totaliter bir otokrasiye dönüştüğü distopik bir gelecekte geçen anlatı, Ege Denizi’nde yaşayan mürekkep balıklarından (sübye) elde edilen süperiletken bir sıvının keşfi etrafında şekillenir. Antik bir meteordan sızdığı anlaşılan bu madde, uluslararası güçler ile kurumsal çıkar odaklarının acımasız sömürü mücadelesine girişmesiyle birlikte derin bir jeopolitik ve ekolojik krizi tetikler. Büyülü gerçekçilikle örülü bu karanlık arka planda, hikâye bir iskelede oturup insan doğası, özgürlüğün yitimi ve tükenen anlam duygusu üzerine düşünen yorgun bir bireyin iç dünyasına odaklanır.

Balıkçı Memo ile çıkılan tehlikeli bir deniz yolculuğu, metnin toplumsal ve metafizik temalarını taşıyan güçlü bir metafora dönüşür; bu yolculuk, kaçınılmaz biçimde şiddetli bir gemi kazasıyla sonlanır. Eserin başlığı ve tekrar eden ana motifi olan Tornistan, denizcilikteki geri manevra anlamının ötesine geçerek, yıkıma sürüklenen bir rotadan geri dönme arzusunu simgeler; hem fiziksel bir hareketi hem de felsefî bir özlemi dile getirir. Nihayetinde bu metin, bilimkurgusal öğeleri şiirsel düşünceyle harmanlayarak çevresel talanı, iktidar şiddetini ve insanlık tarihindeki çatışmaların döngüsel doğasını eleştirel bir bakışla sorgular.

 PROLOGUE

This literary source, titled Tornistan, presents a speculative fiction narrative set in a future Turkey where a newly discovered extraterrestrial substance from Aegean squids can create room-temperature superconductors. The text juxtaposes a political conflict over the exploitation of these creatures against a philosophical struggle of a protagonist facing an existential crisis. While the government pushes for industrial extraction despite environmental warnings, the main character experiences a metaphorical and literal shipwreck during a storm. The story utilizes magical realism and metaphysical themes to explore the concept of reversal, symbolized by the nautical term "tornistan." Ultimately, the narrative weaves together scientific wonder, socio-political commentary, and poetic reflections on the cyclical nature of time and consciousness.

Set in a dystopian future where Turkey has transitioned into a total autocracy, the narrative centers on the discovery of a superconducting liquid derived from Ege Sea mollusks known as cuttlefish. This substance, leaked from an ancient meteor, has triggered a geopolitical and ecological crisis as international powers and corporate entities fight to exploit the resource. Amidst this magical realist backdrop, the story follows a weary individual who contemplates human nature and the loss of freedom while sitting on a pier. A dangerous sea voyage with a fisherman named Memo serves as a metaphor for the social and metaphysical themes of the text, culminating in a violent shipwreck. The title and recurring motif, Tornistan, emphasizes a "return" or "reverse" movement, reflecting both the nautical maneuvers and a philosophical desire to revert from a path of destruction. Ultimately, the work blends sci-fi elements with poetic reflection to critique environmental exploitation and the cyclic nature of human conflict
